What is Spiritual Direction?
The major goal of spiritual direction is to help the spiritual seeker establish intimacy with God. It is a process of developing a closer and more meaningful relationship with the Divine. Usually two people are involved - a director who facilitates the sessions and the directee, who has come specifically for spiritual growth. However, group spiritual direction formats can also be utilized.
Actually, the real direction is from the Holy Spirit and the director’s major purpose is to help the directee create an environment conducive to “hearing” (discerning) spiritual guidance. Spiritual directors do not tell people what to do; they are there to facilitate the spiritual journey. THE ANSWERS ARE WITHIN THE PERSON.
Not surprisingly, spiritual directors are working on their own spiritual journey and therefore also have their own director. All of us are continually evolving spiritually.
